Diabetic Foot Care

When you have diabetes it is important to take care of your feet. It doesn't matter if you require wound care, twice yearly preventative assessment or routine nail and skin care. Chiropodists strive to prevent diabetic foot complications such as ulcerations, infections and amputation. At times, specific footwear and/or devices may be required to prevent or improve your foot condition. Your chiropodist will educate and help you to take care of your diabetes related foot care needs

Custom Orthoses

Custom orthoses are designed to adjust, support and control foot function. The goal is to treat, prevent injury and redistribute pressure from corns, calluses and bony prominences. The process begins with a thorough biomechanical examination. Your feet will be cast with plaster of Paris. These casts are then sent with a highly detailed prescription to have orthoses made specific to your needs. Footwear is also assessed and help provided with footwear choices and fit. The custom foot orthoses created by your chiropodist are prescription medical devices, and often covered by extended health insurance.

Foot Mobilization

Foot mobilization therapy (FMT) is a gentle technique that corrects misaligned or dysfunctional foot joints, aiming to gradually restore the way they work. By addressing the underlying cause of the foot pain, mobilizing and manipulating the foot joints will stimulate the body to heal itself. This is achieved via a series of hands-on treatment sessions. Sometimes FMT is applied in conjunction with custom foot orthoses. Combined with a structured foot exercise program, your feet will become a strong, supportive foundation to your body with the goal of giving you improved foot function and increased range of motion.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are a painful condition that typically does not resolve without careful intervention. Any toe can be affected, but the big toes are affected most often. It is a common problem that should be dealt with quickly to avoid the risk of infection and spreading further into the foot. We offer three levels of treatment depending on the symptoms presented.

  1. If there is curving or pinching of the nail we can offer conservative treatment of the nails such as careful trimming, education and improved footwear choices.
  2. The Onyfix® system, a new solution (see the video below)
  3. If there is noticeable inflammation and/or infection we can offer permanent nail removal — a minor procedure to remove part or all of a painful ingrown nail performed under local anaesthetic.

Onyfix® Nail Correction

This short video demonstrates how the Onyfix® system works to correct problem toenails. Fraoch Shepherd is certified to use the Onyfix® technique.

Call us to make an appointment so we can assess your situation and determine the best approach —to not only relieve your pain but to prevent future occurrences.
